ON-GOING FIGURE STUDIO: MONDAYS

18+ years of age, unless written permission to attend by legal guardian.
4:30pm-6:30pm Monday evenings, 6 sessions for $50 (or $10 per walk-in)
This is not a class but an open studio to "brush-up" your anatomy

Subjects will be determined by the students on the first day of class.  The emphasis will be on painting surfaces.  We will explore painting on gessoed paper, rice papers, hot press paper and yupo.  Ideas from "Exploring Watercolor" by Elizabeth Groves will be discussed.  Weekly critiques and demonstrations of subjects each class.

This is a combined course for beginning and advanced students.  Beginning students may join the class at any time.  Instruction is individual.  More advanced students will be working on painting waterfalls and landscapes.  If there is interest we will also use crinkle paper.

This class is a must for anyone contemplating watercolor as a painting medium.  The class covers the basic techniques and concepts necessary to paint in watercolor successfully.  We will learn some of the "tricks" of the medium plus color mixing, brushstrokes, washes, and composition.  We will paint a number of fall subjects using new techniques.

While learning the tools/building blocks for creating watercolors, students will also share exercises in creative thinking.  All levels of ability welcome.  Class size is 5-8 students.  Students supply their own materials.  Contact Marni at marnilawsonwatercolors@hotmail.com or 703-577-0967 to arrange for sign-up and payment.  MAKE CHECKS OUT TO Marni Lawson.

Collage and Mixed Media Wednesdays March 24th-April 7th 1pm-4:30pm $70

Spring Flowers Wednesdays May 5th- June 16th 1pm-3pm $120

MATERIALS FEE:  $12.00 payable at time of class  (Each student will receive 2 canvases, hanging hardware, spray varnish and paint samples)

In this workshop you will paint a flower or pet (or subject of your choice from your photos) on a stretched canvas using traditional watercolor paints and brushes. Forget all that you know about painting on paper because this is a whole new experience. Some watercolor experience is helpful but not necessary. No supplies need to be purchased ahead of time for this class but bring your palette and brushes if you have them. Paint samples will be given to you.

 Discover the steps to creating art that expresses your unique artistic voice.  See how mystery, drama, emotion and universality can be powerful vehicles for personal expression. Using acrylics, the artist will demonstrate her creative process, from conception through completion, including the use of expressive color, texture, collage and surface decoration.  Time will be given for participants to work on their own, exploring sources of inspiration, subject matter, formal elements, processes and techniques.  Participants should bring the media they like best to work in.
