Workshop attendees should have an understanding of basic watercolor techniques.

Capture the personality and feel of soft fur on animals using soft vs hard edges.  In this workshop the artists will be painting both wet into wet and wet into dry, as well as learning the use of masking fluid.  You will experiment with a wide array of textured fur, both short and long, all black, all white, and all coat colors in between.  These techniques can be used to paint a variety of subjects.

The instructor will provide a photo reference of a dog; however, each artist may bring a reference of their own of any furry animal if you prefer.  If you bring your own reference, please be sure it is in focus, large enough to see all the details, and has a good range of value.

Artist and Baltimore native, Stacy Lund Levy has been creating art in many forms since kindergarten.  She is a former medical illustrator turned professional fine artist and teacher. Currently she teaches classes at Carroll Community College and North Carroll Senior Center, as well as watercolor workshops.  She is both a board member and signature member of the Baltimore Watercolor Society, and a signature member of both the Pennsylvania and Philadelphia Watercolor Societies.  Her work can be viewed at Lundartstudios.com, on Instagram @Artorangutan, and in the ManneqART Museum.

Supply List – Painting Animals in Watercolor with Stacy Lund Levy

A completed drawing from the reference provided (or yours), size doesn’t matter, but no smaller than 8×10”.

Paper: Feel free to use whatever brand of good quality paper that you are comfortable with.  Also bring several sheets of scrap watercolor paper to practice masking and various color combinations.  I recommend either Arches or Fabriano. I use Arches 300 lb. cold pressed.

Paint

Different brands produce different results.  I prefer Daniel Smith or Winsor & Newton.   I will be demonstrating with the following colors:

  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Burnt Sienna
  • Alizarin Crimson
  • Yellow ochre
  • Cerulean Blue
  • Cobalt Blue
  • Opera Rose
  • Quinacridone Gold

Masking Fluid

I prefer Pebeo, because it is pale blue, and you can see where you are applying it.  Please bring what you are comfortable with. MAKE SURE IT HAS NOT DRIED UP. Masking fluid should be very liquid and not clumped.

Brushes. The instructor will provide a grainer brush for each artist.  In addition, please bring these brushes:

  • Various sizes (again, whatever you are comfortable with).  I typically use a 1” flat or larger for backgrounds,
  • Rounds #4, 8, 10, 12 or 14 — I prefer Ascota Perla, Loew Cornell Ultra Round, or Princeton Aqua Elite
  • Rigger brush for details as needed.

Bring the standard watercolor supplies:

  • water container

  • paper towels
